(Author’s note – I found an American 1935 edition of Roget’s Thesaurus at an estate sale last week.  It is in very good condition.  The 1935 American edition has the distinction of being the very first one issued with the sanction and approval of Samuel Romilly Roget, the author’s grandson and holder of the existing British copyright.  Previous American printings were not authorised by Roget and are considered ‘incomplete’.  I chose ‘atonement’ for One Word Blog Day as it was the entry I came upon when I first opened the book.  vmls)

The couple are “still very much on honeymoon!” Part time teacher/barista/student, Veronica’s long fascination with noir fiction prompted her to try her own hand at writing fiction – “the last two years have been a roller coaster!”, where she honed her ‘writing chops’ on an unsuspecting public over at Flash Fiction Friday and Phil Ambler's (formerly Lily Childs’) Friday Prediction. Veronica has been published in Pulp Metal Magazine, The Lost Children: A Charity Anthology, the horror anthology 100 Horrors, from Cruentus Libri Press, and the inaugural issue of Literary Orphans magazine. Brazill’s DRUNK ON THE MOON 2: A Roman Dalton Anthology and Near To The Knuckle's debut anthology - Gloves Off. Veronica counts among her mentors - Carole A Parker, Lily Childs, Paul D Brazill, Richard Godwin and Joyce Juzwik. Atonement is an interesting word to have picked. I wonder if there actually was anything missing or incomplete about the old ‘unauthorized’ edition.

  2. Yes, out of all the other words on the two pages I opened to… my brain ‘chose’ atonement. Considering the two chapters I have been working on for my novel, I would say that ‘choice’ was a subconscious rather than conscious one.

I wonder too… perhaps nothing. Roget may have been in a ‘huff’ because ‘those bloody Yanks’ didn’t ask permission? Remember the tizzy they threw when we dumped all that tea in the harbor? “Stiff upper lip” my…. :)
